Devil’s Food Cake

Developed specifically for our Halloween festivities, our Devil’s Food Cake is rich and chocolatey with a bit of a kick from espresso powder.




21/2 cups all purpose flour, sifted

3/4 cup Dutch-process cocoa

11/2 tsp. espresso powder

2 cups sugar

3/4 tsp. salt

2 tsp. baking powder

3 eggs, at room temperature

1 cup milk

1 cup vegetable oil

2 tsp. vanilla

Buttercream Frosting:

1 1/2 cups butter (softened)

4 cups powdered sugar, sifted

1 tsp vanilla

2 tbsp heavy cream



  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Grease and flour pans. (We use Baker’s Joy.)
  3. Combine dry ingredients in mixing bowl.
  4. Stir in liquid ingredients.
  5. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  6. Pour into prepared pans.
  7. Bake for about 25 minutes, or until it tests done. (Baking time will vary based on the pans you use.)


  1. In mixer bowl, cream the butter.
  2. Mix in powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time.
  3. Stir in vanilla.
  4. Add cream, to desired consistency.
  5. Beat until light and fluffy.


Adjust amount of cream for desired consistency.
