Everyone needs a good sugar cookie recipe. They are about a dime a dozen but I can guarantee you that these are the best!

Honestly, my mom has been making these for as long as I can remember. We use these for everything! From Christmas, New Years, Valentine’s, Easter, Fourth of July, to everything in between!

This is just a basic sugar cookie that works perfectly for all your holiday wishes.

Or even just your everday wishes when you just want a sugar cookie.

I’ve already eaten like, four of these. So, I think it’s safe to say that I won’t tell if you don’t!

How to make sugar cookies

Easily! First, gather your ingredients. There’s only six so, this won’t take any time at all.

Now, add your butter and sugar to your mixing bowl. Stir until combined. Do not over beat! You don’t want your butter to become fluffy because this causes the cookie to spread when it bakes so, keep an eye on it!

Add the egg and vanilla and mix well. Make sure the egg gets thoroughly incorporated!

Last two ingredients! Add the baking soda and, slowly, add your flour. Mix well after each addition. About 1/2 cup of flour at a time.

Aha! Your cookie dough is done. So close to the finish!

Split your cookie dough in half and place one half on a piece of parchment and the other back in the mixing bowl. Now, you don’t need to flour your sugar your surface before rolling. I recommend placing another piece of parchment over the cookie dough and rolling it to about an 1/8inch thick.

You can use whatever cookie cutter you like. Just make sure to try and get the most amount of cookies out of this first batch because the more you work the dough, the tougher the cookies are gonna get.

Once your cookies are cut, remove the excess and set aside. Place the sugar cookies on a lined sheet pan and set aside.

Loosely form another ball of dough with your excess and repeat the over head steps until no more dough is remaining (this includes the other half in the mixing bowl!).

This step is optional but if you’re doing plain sugar cookies, sprinkle a little decorative white (or whatever color you want) sugar on top!

Place the sheet pans in a 350 degree oven and cook for 12 minutes, or until slight browning.

Can you freeze sugar cookies

Of course! I’d recommend freezing them before any icing gets near them. So, once they’ve cooled from the oven, I’d place them in the freezer in an air tight bag.

Are sugar cookies nut free

Actually, yes! This recipe is nut free. However, I still recommend you double check your ingredients just to be sure.

How long do sugar cookies last

If kept in an airtight container on the counter, I’d say for about a week or two before they start to become stale.
