Chocolate Sauce vs Hot Fudge Sauce… What’s The Difference?

This recipe is for a chocolate sauce. The difference between the two are the ingredients and the thickness. A hot fudge sauce is generally made from cream and butter, whereas a chocolate sauce is made from water and sugar (simple syrup!). This recipe thickens slightly as it cools, but it doesn’t need to be heated up to enjoy like a hot fudge sauce.

What Kind of Chocolate Should I Use?

With so many types of chocolate on the market, I’m sure it’s easy to get overwhelmed. No worries! We’ve tested and found the best. We highly recommend finding a chocolate that is a semisweet chocolate. This should read about a 64% on the packaging.

If you’re unfamiliar with what that means, the percentage on chocolate tells you how much of the bar is made from pure cacao beans. So, a 64% means that 64% of the chocolate has been made from ingredients found in the cacao bean. The rest of the bar is sweetener, fat, etc.

The next thing you need is a higher quality chocolate. I promise, it’ll make all the difference!

Chocolate Sauce Troubleshooting

Chocolate Pieces Didn’t Melt: This could be one or two things. Either the milk wasn’t as hot as it should be or you didn’t let it stand for a few minutes before stirring. This can be remedied by placing it in the microwave for a few seconds to re-heat.

My Chocolate Sauce Is Lumpy: Again, this could be a few things. Was all the chocolate melted? Was the cocoa powder fully incorporated into the simple syrup? If not, try sifting your cocoa powder beforehand to try and reduce the risk of lumps.

The Chocolate Sauce Thickened After Refrigerating: This is gonna happen and isn’t actually a problem! If you feel like it’s a little to thick to use, try microwaving it for a few seconds!

What To Make With This Chocolate Sauce

The better question is what NOT to make with this! But, here are a few of our favorite things.

  • Chocolate Milk
  • Pouring it over ice cream (specifically vanilla!)
  • Turtle Ice Cream Pie
  • Drizzled over hot chocolate

How To Store

Once you’ve made the sauce, you can store it in a jar and keep in the fridge, or you can even store it in about 2 tablespoon servings! Whatever works best for you. Just remember it will thicken.

Expert Tips

  • Make sure you let the chocolate stand for at least 2 minutes in the heated cream.
  • Don’t whisk the chocolate and cream mixture! Only use a rubber spatula or wooden spoon to stir them together.
  • Don’t overcook the simple syrup!
  • This recipe will thicken in the refrigerator. If you would like a thinner consistency, heat it in the microwave for a few seconds.
  • Use a high quality semisweet chocolate for this recipe. Anything darker may make this recipe too bitter. Anything sweeter might be too sweet.
  • This sauce also works as a dip for fruits!
