Super simple and oh so delicious, these easy to make Homemade Flour Tortillas are guaranteed to become your new go-to for weeknight dinners! Made with only 3 pantry staple ingredients (flour, salted butter, and water!), these tortillas come together in almost no time at all. Once cooked, these tortillas are soft, chewy, flexible, and the perfect compliment to so many of your favorite dishes. So simple, but so good!
About The Recipe
If there is something that we make often, it’s definitely these flour tortilla’s! They are so easy to make and require minimal ingredients. Plus, with a small resting time, they can be made up relatively quickly and eaten for lunch or dinner at a moment notice!
The best part? These tortilla’s genuinely taste SO. GOOD.
And while this recipe probably isn’t the most authentic, it’s something we’ve been making for years. Though, I will admit, it took us long time to figure out how to make them just right.
From using different fats, different flours, even different ways to cook them…we had tried everything! Each recipe was slightly better than our last, but we could never really get them to be what we were looking for.
Until one day we finally found that keeping it simple was really the best way to go. All-purpose flour, salted butter, and just enough water to bring it together.
Since then, they have been something we make weekly and store in the freezer for later use!
Bonus? They work so well with so many of our favorite Mexican-inspired dishes. From tacos to enchiladas…they’re always delicious and the perfect compliment to pretty much anything!
Every bite is soft, fluffy, buttery, and truly so delicious.

- All-Purpose Flour
- Salted Butter
- Water
How To Make Flour Tortillas
Step 1: Make the dough
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix together with hands until dough is soft and pliable.
Step 2: Divide
Divide the dough into 2 ounce portions. Roll into balls and cover with a towel. Allow to rest for 20 minutes.
Step 3: Roll out and cook
Working with one at a time, roll into a 6 inch circle.
Place on heated griddle. Cook until the tortilla starts to puff/bubble and is just starting to develop brown spots, about 1-2 minutes. Flip over. Continue to cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until brown spots start to develop.
Remove to a plate and cover with a damp cloth. As each tortilla is cooked, stack it under the cloth on top of the others.
Flour Tortillas FAQ
Should my dough be smooth after mixing? Unlike most breads, this dough is actually rough! Don’t worry about kneading it too much. All you need to do is make everything is well combined!
Why do I need to let it rest? Letting the dough rest allows the gluten to relax, which means better tortillas! Though, if you’re in a rush, you don’t have to let the dough rest the full 20 minutes. Just a few minutes will do!
Can I make this in advance? Sure thing! Once the dough is mixed up, let it rest for about 10-20 minutes and then cover with plastic wrap. You can refrigerate it for up to 2 days.
Do I need a tortilla press? Actually, no! We found that it’s actually a lot easier to make this recipe without a tortilla press. All you need is a rolling pin!
How do I get perfectly round tortillas? Well, it is possible, but you just need to really focus and go slow with the rolling out process. It’s not something that’s mandatory. Just roll out the dough and enjoy!
Do I need to grease my pan? No! The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it doesn’t stick. All you need to do is make sure your pan is hot before placing a tortilla on it.
Why are my tortillas not bubbling? This happens when the tortillas aren’t rested long enough. There’s nothing wrong with them and they will still cook through. Though, we found that after resting about 15-20 minutes, our tortillas were really bubbly!

How To Store
Once these tortilla’s are made, the best way to store them is in the freezer! Just be sure to place a piece of parchment paper in-between each tortilla to keep them from sticking to each other.
Substitutions
- If you would like to make this recipe vegan, use your favorite plant-based butter!
- Unsalted butter or vegetable oil can be used. Just remember you may need to add salt!

- ¾ cup water
