My first experience with sour mix was as a young bartender. I was never happy with the mixes I could find, and my cousin (a much more experienced bartender) told me to try using Country Time lemonade – mixed double strength! That worked amazingly well! My customers loved it and started specifically requesting it. (They didn’t know it was Country Time. They all thought it was something fancy!)
As I’ve gotten older and my tastes have changed, I wanted something new. Different. Fresh. Something without preservatives! I tried other people’s recipes. I couldn’t find anything I loved. So…I made my own!
Come on. Everybody needs a good sour mix recipe in their arsenal. Let’s face it. That stuff you buy at the grocery store is just not very good. Fresh is always better.
The best part about this homemade sour mix is that it blends perfectly with tequila, bourbon, vodka, or just plain old water. You can adjust the tartness to your preferences. You can muddle in some fresh fruit to change it up. Maybe a sprig of mint – or even some rosemary, if you’re feeling adventurous!
How to make homemade sour mix
Our sour mix is a blend of freshly squeezed lemon and lime juices blended with simple syrup. It’s very easy to adjust the quantity based on your needs. In other words, you can mix enough for one drink at a time or for a whole pitcher of drinks (or more, if the occasion demands it). We always like to keep some extra in the fridge, so we mix a cup of lemon juice with a cup of lime juice and stir in 2 cups of simple syrup. You can adjust the tartness to your own taste by adding more or less simple syrup. If you’re not a big fan of pulp, you can strain that out before you serve it or store it.

- 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
- 2 cups simple syrup
- Combine all ingredients.
- Stir to mix.
