Red Velvet Cake

Red Velvet Cake is a wonderfully light chocolate flavored cake that looks like anything but chocolate! Cream Cheese Frosting really enhances the flavor.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

2 cups sugar

4 eggs, room temperature

1 tsp. vanilla

2 Tbsp. cocoa

1 cup buttermilk

3 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp. salt

2 oz. red food coloring

1 tsp. soda

1tsp. baking powder

1 Tbsp. vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Prepare pans. (We use Baker’s Joy.) If you are using 9″ cake pans instead of decorative pans, you will need 4.)
  3. Cream butter and sugar.
  4. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix cocoa with vanilla and enough water to make a paste and add to butter mixture.
  6. Whisk together flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder, and add to batter alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
  7. Stir in food coloring.
  8. Pour into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes for round pans, or until cake tests done. The time will vary with decorative pans depending on the size and shape.

Notes

This recipe is enough to fill the large skull cake pan and the small skull cakelet pan.
